Am I foolish to buy frozen fish from China?

My mother refuses to buy any food that comes from China, but I like to eat all kinds of fish & sea food & find it hard to find the varieties in my local area. Just today I purchased frozen wild roughy, wild salmon & wild mahi-mahi. When I looked at the label, they all said "imported from China". Am I taking a big risk of getting sick or poisoned as my mother claims?
cactusone: I would love to be able to buy those fish locally, but if you had read my Q, you would have noticed that I said I cannot find them fresh. However, I buy all my shell fish locally as that is no problem.

Personally, I would not buy any fish from ANY country, including USA if the fish have been farm raised. That’s the first question you should ask whether in a restaurant or at your local fish dealer. These fish are loaded with anti-biotics, and food coloring. There are many other species of fish/frozen, that come from other countries. So I would find another source for your seafood!

With all of the controversy surrounding the fish industry in China you may want to consider carefully before purchasing. The current practice of putting antibiotics in the water of the fish in china are found to not be approved by the USDA and, are known to cause antibiotic resistance. The standards of cleanliness and sanitation are also of concern as well.

At this point in time I would hold off on any consumer goods coming out of China. The FDA has warnings out on everything from toothpaste to farm raised seafood – http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/uschinatrade

This is probably more political than a real hazard, but when your health is concerned the right choice is the safe one. Be careful eating out as well making sure to ask where the seafood is coming from since many restaurants get frozen product like shrimp and catfish which are farm raised in China. Quality restaurants would have already made a change, but there are many that may have found a good deal on some cheap seafood, so make sure you ask!

      Better safe then sorry!

China just executed the head of their Agriculture and Drug program because of all the tainted products leaving China. What do you think??? Listen to your mother.

If you are really worried about getting sick from the fish just go out every once and a while to a seafood restaurant

Whatever you like is up to you, every different fish out there all have diff rent flavors to them.
Then of course you can cook them to your likings too, so just sit back and enjoy all the different flavors the world has to offer you.
